How Important is a Leader’s Emotional Intelligence?
Emotional intelligence is a key ingredient in all of the leadership training that I create. I refer to emotional intelligence as one’s ability to manage their own emotions, and the emotions of those around them, during difficult to manage situations. Emotions are powerful and when leveraged, they can properly guide our actions throughout the day, especially when times are tough.
Our emotional intelligence can be measured through a TTI EQ Assessmentthat measures our EQ, our emotional quotient. In my opinion, leaders should consistently be working to improve their EQ. Why? Because leaders need high intrapersonal skills in order to have effective interpersonal skills. The intrapersonal skills help them to govern themselves, while the interpersonal skills help them to lead those around them to positive growth. Both skill sets work together and are a key part of emotional intelligence. Without that high EQ, leaders can find themselves unsure of how to reach those around them, and unable to meet their own goals.
Having a high EQ might sound all well and good, but how does someone raise their EQ? Let me start by saying that it takes time. No one is going to successfully raise their EQ if they aren’t willing to slow down and put in dedicated time. If you are willing to do that, great! I know that you can see your EQ rise and see your day-to-day attitude and goal achievement rise with it.
